A Bolton Abbey Picnic Day
A driven day out to Bolton Abbey with picnic — priory ruins, Strid Wood walk, Cavendish tea. No parking, no midge worry, no rush home.
Bolton Abbey is one of the great English picnic spots and a nightmare to park at on a July Saturday. Booking a chauffeur means you unload the hamper at the Cavendish Pavilion gate and never see the car park.
Booked by retired couples, small friend groups (fours and sixes), and by the Yorkshire diaspora down from London for the weekend.
Home → Cavendish Pavilion gate → picnic loop → home. 20 to 80 minutes each way.
The silver Mercedes-Benz V-Class is a luxury MPV seating up to 7 passengers with generous luggage space. Share passenger and luggage details when enquiring.
11:00 to 17:00 is the local rhythm. Strid Wood walk is 90 minutes; the priory ruins another 30.
Harrogate £220 · Ilkley £160 · Skipton £180 · Leeds £280 · York £360.
- Hamper carried from car to picnic spot on request
- Return-leg cool box for anything unfinished
- Estate parking permit (saves £15 on the day)
- Waterproof picnic blanket in the boot
- Extended wait — we don't leave until you're ready
- Strid Wood midges peak May–July at dusk; we've got repellent in the glove box
- The Devonshire Arms afternoon tea is a good rain plan; book 48 hours ahead
- The B6160 back to Ilkley is 20 minutes shorter than the A65 loop
Can you bring a picnic if we haven't packed?
Yes — Bettys hampers to order with 72 hours' notice. Roughly £120 for two, £220 for four.
As long as you want — the day is booked block. Six hours is typical, nine is fine.
The Strid itself has serious signs and rope barriers — supervise children strictly. The wider walk is very safe and flat for the first half.
