Three Cistercian sites in a day
About 95 miles over eight hours, this route links Fountains Abbey, Rievaulx and Bolton Abbey. We begin at Fountains, allowing two hours for the ruins and the Studley Royal water gardens, before lunch in Ripon.
The afternoon crosses to Rievaulx on the edge of the North York Moors, then swings back west to the priory at Bolton Abbey in Wharfedale before the return to Harrogate or York.
Pacing the walking
Each abbey involves time on foot across grass and uneven ground. Because the car waits, you can linger at Fountains and keep the later stops shorter, or the other way around. We run the itinerary from April to October when the grounds are at their best.
Vehicle options
Lunch in Ripon sits naturally between Fountains and Rievaulx, and the market town is a short drive from both. Starting from Harrogate, Fountains is close; from York, we may reverse the order and begin at Rievaulx.
Either car suits this day. Our silver Mercedes-Benz V-Class is a luxury MPV seating up to 7 passengers with generous luggage space, suited to executive groups, airport transfers, weddings and events.
