The interesting question is where that stops being true — because for groups, for luggage-heavy trips, for early strike-affected mornings and for multi-stop days, the answer changes completely.

When the train is obviously right

One or two travellers, city-centre to city-centre, standard timings, light luggage. The East Coast route is fast, the seat is workable, and nothing on the road competes with it.

The sensible hybrid here is a chauffeur to York or Leeds station and another at the London end — you get the rail speed without the two awkward ends.

When the chauffeur wins

Three or more travelling together changes the arithmetic immediately, because rail cost scales per person and a car does not. A V-Class with four colleagues is frequently cheaper than four flexible tickets.

Reliability considerations

Engineering works, industrial action and cancelled early services are real risks on the rail route and they cluster at exactly the times business travellers need certainty. A car is slower on a good day and considerably more predictable on a bad one.

How long does the drive from York to central London take?
