Booking the wrong model is the most common way clients overpay for chauffeur work. Hourly hire and fixed transfers solve different problems, and the deciding factor is almost always one question: does the car need to wait?

Book hourly when the car must stay

Hourly hire is correct when the itinerary is fluid, when luggage or equipment stays in the car, or when the gap between journeys is under about two hours. Meeting days, shoot days, race days and weddings all fall into this category.

It is also correct when the passenger cannot be left waiting under any circumstances — visiting dignitaries, medical appointments with uncertain end times, and any schedule where a missed connection has real consequences.

Book fixed transfers when the journeys are discrete

Two clean journeys separated by a long dinner, an overnight stay or a full working day should be booked as two transfers. You pay for the driving, not for a chauffeur sitting in a car park.

Airport work is almost always a fixed transfer, because the return leg is on a different day and the wait is measured in flight tracking rather than hours.

The grey zone

Between two and four hours of gap, the answer depends on location. In central York or Leeds, a chauffeur can reposition and return easily, so two transfers usually win. At a remote Dales venue with a forty-minute repositioning leg each way, hourly hire is frequently cheaper as well as safer.

Can I switch from hourly to a transfer on the day?

Where the diary allows, yes, but it is far cheaper to decide at booking. Once a chauffeur's day is allocated to an hourly booking, that time is committed.

Does hourly hire include mileage?

A sensible mileage allowance is included for the type of booking. Long-distance work within an hourly booking is quoted as a day rate with a stated allowance instead.

Which model suits a full day of meetings?

Hourly hire, almost always. Meeting overruns are normal and a waiting car absorbs them without rebooking.
